Túró Rudi is a beloved Hungarian snack made of sweet, creamy cottage cheese (túró) filling, coated in a crisp dark chocolate shell. These bars are slightly tangy, mildly sweet, and incredibly satisfying! They’re a childhood favorite for many Hungarians and can be easily made at home. ❤️
🛒 Ingredients (Makes about 10 bars)
For the Filling:
✔ 250g (1 cup) Hungarian túró or dry cottage cheese 🧀
✔ 2 tbsp powdered sugar ❄
✔ ½ tsp vanilla extract 🌿
✔ 1 tbsp sour cream or heavy cream 🥛
✔ 1 tbsp butter, softened 🧈
✔ ½ tsp lemon zest 🍋 (optional, for extra freshness)
For the Chocolate Coating:
✔ 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa) 🍫
✔ 1 tbsp coconut oil or butter (for a glossy finish) 🧈
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Túró Filling
- Mash or blend the túró (or dry cottage cheese) until smooth and creamy.
- Stir in powdered sugar, vanilla, sour cream, butter, and lemon zest. Mix well.
- Shape the mixture into small bars or logs (about 2 inches long).
- Place on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for 30-60 minutes, until firm.
2️⃣ Prepare the Chocolate Coating
- Melt dark chocolate and coconut oil together using a double boiler or in short bursts in the microwave (stirring every 15 seconds).
- Let the melted chocolate cool slightly so it’s not too runny.
3️⃣ Coat the Bars
- Remove the frozen túró bars from the freezer.
- Using a fork, dip each bar into the melted chocolate, ensuring it’s fully coated.
- Place on parchment paper and let the chocolate harden at room temperature or in the fridge.
